Recently we took a few steers/bullocks to a feedlot near Darwin to sell. While we were there we noticed they had quite a few pens full of buffalo. These buffalo are caught out in the scrub and then sold to feedlots where they wait for boat exportation to Indonesia. Once there they are used for meat. The feedlots face a dilemma as the buffalo need water and mud to keep them cool, much the same as pigs. But while in the feedlots the moistened manure ferments and gives off heat. This heat causes the buffalo to become warmer. The heat from the sun beating down and the heat from the fermenting manure cause many of the buffalo to overheat.

The feedlots are working together to develop a solution to this problem, but have not devised a plan as of yet.

You may also have noticed that all the buffalo's horns are cut to a length within the ear. The same rule applies for cattle. Mainly so the cattle can not hurt each other when fighting while in the close quarters on the boats.
