Sink Hole

There are many sink holes on Sturt Downs. Some are small, simple holes in the ground that are not too deep and some like the one in the picture are Huge!! After a month or two of rain during the wet season many more of these sink holes appear. The water washes the dirt away and these holes can be seen. Butch has been out and about lately in the Polaris Ranger and said he has seen numerous new holes.
We have visited the sink hole in these pictures a few different times throughout the year. Butch discovered it last year while mustering cattle. Butch and the helicopter pilot were trailing some cattle when the chopper pilot informed Butch. If it weren't for the eyes from the sky, Butch wouldn't have seen the hole, and could have found himself at the bottom of it! The edges are very steep and the vegetation doesn't really change that much before the edge, giving no warning. We have not seen the bottom of this hole as it is covered with vines and vegetation. The hole is approximately 200 metres/yards wide and we are assuming about that deep. There is a small trail down one side of the ledge, but it only leads a short ways down.

If you look closely you can see Kim, Graham and the kids in this picture. They have walked down as far as the trail leads. Just a few of the interesting landscape aspects we have found here on Sturt Downs.
